Our design philosophy is keep the form simple, design from the inside out and concentrate on materials.
The spaces a building creates are the most valuable asset to good architecture. When tastes change buildings can always be repainted but the lasting value to architecture are the spaces they create and how they add to the emotional experience of the design. Mennie Architects endeavour to design timeless architectural homes, using solid honest materials and keeping traditional crafted forms.
Natural light is always a driving force in good design, we believe our local knowledge of regional Victoria puts us in good stead to understand how to plan local homes and harness light favourably to the rural context.
We also believe materials play a key role in successful Architecture. Where possible we prioritise raw, earthy, natural materials, avoiding painted surfaces and keeping materials honest.
Rural Victoria has many environmental contexts, from the English hills of Taradale to the goldfields of Maldon, Castlemaine and Bendigo, to the unique blend of Australian bushland settings and Swiss Italian hills in the Daylesford / Hepburn shire.
Our practice is placed centrally to these districts and understands the local context. We appreciate the historic value of these regions through vegetation and the built form. We look at individual projects in these unique locations and design with that in mind. Appropriate materials like Yapeen stone quarried in the district and Victorian timbers help buildings to settle well in there surroundings from the day they are built.
We believe the best designed homes are relaxed, warm and inviting.
